Subject: Applied Geophysics I

 

Scholarity:

2/0/3; 3.0 UC; 3rd year / 2nd semester.

 

Objectives:

Introduction to theorectical principles of the different methods of geophysical prospection. Seismic methods and gravimetric methods. Applications in diverse fields of resource exploration and engineering problems. Processing, modelation and interpretation techniques of seismic and gravimetric data. Environmental protection.

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge and comprehension of the theorectical principles and seismic and gravimetric methods and its applications in engineering. Development of practical and instrumental qualifications in the domain of the techniques of processing, modelation and interpretation of seismic and gravimetric data.

 

Programme Contents:

Theoretical:

Introduction to geophysical prospection. Geophysical methods and physical properties of rocks and minerals. Seismic methods (refraction and reflection): fundamental concepts, equipment, data acquisition, processing, modelation and interpretation. Gravimetric methods: fundamental concepts, equipment, data acquisition, correction, modelation and interpretation. Applications on resource exploration, engineering problems and environmental protection.

Practical:

Processing, modelation and interpretation of seismic and gravimetric data. Application to real cases.

 

Methodologies of Teaching:

Theoretical and practical formal classes.

 

Evaluation:

Written theorectical exame (60%) and written practical exame (40%).

 

Pre-requirements:

Calculus I, LAAG, Calculus II, Mecanics, Numerical Methods, Programming in Fortran; Geodynamics.
