Subject: Structural Geology

 

Scholarity:

2/0/2; 3.0 UC; 3rd year / 1st semester.

 

Objectives:

Acquisition of knowledge on structures of deformation upon diverse scales of observation, on its geneses and mechaniques and on graphical techniques of representation and analysis of structural data.

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge and comprehension of fundamental concepts on structural geology and its applications. Development of practical qualifications in the domain of structural cartography and graphical techniques of representation and analysis of structural data.

 

Programme Contents:

Theoretical:

Tension and deformation; tension regimens; fragile and ductile deformation; mecanisms of deformation; geometry and classification of bends and fractures (faults and diaclasses); Mohr circle for the tension and deformation; linnings and foliations; analysis and interpretation of the deformation;  stereographical projection applied to structural geology; application of structural geology in resource exploration and Engineering problems.

Practical:

Stereographical projection applied to structural geology; Mohr circle for the tension; faults nd tensions; structural cartography.

 

Methodologies of Teaching:

Theorectical and practical formal classes. Field trips.

 

Evaluation:

Written theorectical exame (60%) and written practical exame (40%).

 

Pre-requirements:

Petrology.
