2/2/0; 3.5 UC; 5th year / 1st semester.

 

Programme Contents:

Theoretical:

Fundamental concepts and relations in Pedology. Constituition of the solid phase of the soil; characterization of the most reative constituintes - humic compounds, clay minerals, allophanes and imoglobites, Fe, Al and Mn oxids. Water and gaseous constituintes. Fundamental processes: adsortion and ionic change, specific adsortion, co-precipitation, formation of clay-humic and organo-metallic complexes, oxidation-reduction. Soil degradation: erosion, acidification, salinization and contamination. Causes and remedies.

Theoretical and Practical:

Presentation and discussion of real problems; technique selection of more adequate sampling and analysis for each situation. Interpreation of soil charts. Correspondence between the lettering used in the soil charts of Portugal and the lettering of the FAO.
